Fall Hiking Spots: Amicalola State Park

Tuesday, September 23, 2014

After a great day at Sweetwater Creek State Park on Monday, I headed up to Dawsonville to visit Amicalola State Park on Tuesday morning. It has been a while since I watched the water coming off of Amicalola Falls so I thought it would be a good place to catch some early morning folks on the trail. It didn’t take to long before couples and families started hiking up trail and the 175 steps leading up to the falls. It was a little brisk as the sun hadn’t hit the sweet spot in between the sides of the hills surrounding the falls but it was beautiful, peaceful and quiet. My favorite part of the morning happened while I was at the base of the falls. As I was taking photographs of the falls I noticed 73-year-old Lee Edward Bohner hiking down from the trail. Long bearded and fast moving, I stopped Lee for a few minutes to talk. He and a friend were completing a 185 mile hike on the Appalachian Trail. They had started at Fontana Dam in North Carolina on September 7th. As if this isn’t impressive enough Lee let me know that he had twice completed the entire Appalachian Trail, once in 2007 and again in 2011. By far the highlight of my morning!
