The GM Assembly Plant on the topside of the perimeter of Atlanta has finally disappeared. After months of demolition the final two buildings were pulled down last week and now all that is left are piles of rubble and debris waiting to be shipped to recycling centers.
I passed by the plant on almost a daily basis. The nondescript buildings gave lifeblood to many Doraville residents in decades past as cars steadily made their way out the doors and onto showroom floors across the country. For years the buildings have stood silent after the plant was shut down. Now the property will be turned into a giant conglomerate of office buildings, stores, green spaces and movie studio sound stages.
