Manuel’s Tavern in the Virginia Highlands neighborhood of Atlanta has a reputation. Since opening in 1956, the wood paneled bar has been long since steeped in the political history of the city, the state and the nation. There is a portrait of JFK that hangs over the main bar. There are bumper stickers, photos, newspaper articles and more that cover the other open spaces. Walk in and you can overhear political and religious debates being had by patrons and bartenders alike.
That’s why I was pretty excited to get down to Manuel’s on Wednesday. The Republican debate was being televised and Manuel’s was packed with people. Friends crowded around their tables and the bar all with rapt attention to what was being said by the candidates. During commercials, a healthy roar overtook the main dining room as people discussed and debated what was just seen and said.
Manuel’s Tavern sits on North Highland Ave. in Atlanta. The tavern opened its doors in 1956 and is known as a place to discuss politics.
