First Snow of 2016 in Georgia

Friday, January 22 and Saturday, January 23, 2016

At the end of the third week in January, Georgia got its first real taste of winter. Rain and the cold temperatures made for the first snow of the year. Although not much accumulated unless you were in the farthest reaches of the state (and even then 6-10 inches is laughable to most northerners).

On Friday schools and government offices closed early if they opened at all. People did the grocery store thing and shelves were emptied rather quickly.

On Saturday, after barely getting an inch in most places around the metro Atlanta area, the Georgia Department of Transportation was out to make sure that the salt and sand treatments from the night before were holding the roads open. Children were out in their yards hurling snowballs or trying to find enough to build a snowman. People were out walking. It was much to do about nothing but still fun to see snow on the ground so early in the year.
