Sunday morning was awesome!
I was one of 120 lucky photographers that got a chance to participate in a photowalk of the General Motors assembly plant in Doraville put on by #weloveatl.
For the past few years you may have seen #weloveatl on Facebook or Instagram coupled with really awesome photographs snapped with phones and cameras of places and events all over the city. So I jumped at the chance to check out the plant especially in the company of other photographers. There’s nothing like being with your peers that allows for a really fun creative process .
Demolition of the 165 acre plant that backs up to I-285 started a while ago. Now, it is being re-imagined into a multi-use space, the likes and scale of which will be monumental to the Doraville area. There is talk of movie studios taking over part of the area. There will also be office buildings, restaurants and much more. With such a large space, demolition is expected to continue throughout the year and the construction phase to start around January of 2016.
The plant, which actually started as a dairy farm in the 1940s, was shuttered in 2008 after nearly 60 years of churning out vehicles for the auto manufacturer.
