Following my stop off at the Painted Hills Unit, I headed further east and a little north to the Sheep Rock Unit and the Blue Basin Area of the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument. The basin overlook trail and by association the Island in Time Trail follow an awesome path through an aquamarine colored canyon where fossils from millions of years ago can be actively found to this day. I hiked a little of each and I am glad I did. The colors were something rarely seen in nature and definitely stood out even though I had come over 6,000 miles so far!
