Each year Stone Mountain Park hosts the annual Indian Festival & Pow Wow. Native Americans from the area and afar come to take place and share their history, culture and traditions with the masses. Drum circles and dancers take the main stage in the center of the festival. There are also bird of prey demonstrations, the ability to enter teepees and other traditional dwellings, a chance to shuck beans and mash corn and flour, and learn all about the culture of the original Americans.
I have been to numerous pow wows both here in Georgia and in Massachusetts. Everything about them, to me at least, is an education in a culture that is not nearly appreciated enough. There are stories behind everything. From the different dances to the items that make up a headdress to how the bow and arrow came to be. Definitely check out next year’s pow wow if you get the chance. You won’t be disappointed.
